WordPress 3.4

It’s only been a few days since the release of WordPress 3.3, and naturally the WordPress hardcores are working on version 3.4. Specifically the next upgrade will include the new year’s default theme – twenty twelve – which will start with fresh code.

It’s young in thought but the core features planned include:

  • mobile version of a website
  • variable height header image
  • default to static front page
  • editor styles the same as front end.
  • no featured image in header

Steve Jobs passes away

The day after the new iPhone 4S was released, the world lost Steve Jobs.

It was only a few weeks ago that Jobs had decided to step down from the company he built – twice – and the world was dreading what he was dreading, he had cancer.

Jobs was a perfectionist, he was obsessed with doing things the right way, he some times swore and screamed at his employees but ultimately he revolutionized the way we look at phones and buy music.

It might be fitting that Jobs’ last official announcement to Apple fans was regarding the iCloud service, since Jobs is probably in the clouds now himself.

Keyboard projection

Five years ago, I wrote a quick blog post about the laser keyboard that would project a keyboard. The technology exists but no one has applied to it a mobile phone, yet. Aatma Studio created some great concept videos about cool features that should be included in the iPhone 5 expected to be available this Fall.

Check this out.

It’s not “fake”, it’s “a concept” that is way overdue.

Canada developing opinion on online profiling

Canada’s Privacy Commissioner has just released the final report of her Office’s consultations on the subject of Online Tracking, Profiling and Targeting, and Cloud Computing.

Jennifer Stoddart said:

“Most people have no idea about the rich trail of data they leave behind when they browse the Internet, use social networking sites, or engage the geo-location functions of their mobile devices,” the Commissioner said.

Organizations that track the online activities of Canadians must be more upfront about their practices, Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart has concluded… “it comes down to meaningful consent, which entails informed consent”.

Alex Reid is a Canadian who likes a lot of things. Welcome to my world.
