Everybody’s Free

Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young” was the title of a column piece in the Chicago Tribune written by Mary Schmich in 1997.

In 1999, the essay became the basis of the 1999 hit music single “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)”, by Baz Luhrmann.

I encourage you to give it a listen/watch here.

We Are The Addicts

This morning, I woke up too early, unable to return to sleep. So I began watching a mediocre documentary about Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES).

I found this quote quite apt:

Given that we live in a culture (that) is addicted, that everyone says, to oil where we engage in the pursuit of the amenities and luxuries provided by oil despite the fact that we’re destroying the earth, who are we to tell the addict they shouldn’t be engaging in self-destructive behaviour.

In other words, it’s the scapegoating.

We’re deeply related to the addict. We just don’t want to see the relationship. So we ostracize them and banish them to the social periphery.

Critical Thinking

A good TED talk about being suspicious of stories we hear or read.

What stories don’t people have an incentive to tell?

Sex Stats

The most interesting thing I enjoy about Okcupid is that they compile interesting statistics of their users – and release them to the public.

Last April, they blogged “10 Charts About Sex“.

I’ll warn you, it’s rather raunchy information.

Women who don’t like exercise are twice as likely to have a problem reaching an orgasm than those who do exercise. Disturbingly, they found that as men get older, they are more likely to enjoy rough sex while women prefer the opposite as they age; half of those men aged 58 on the dating site like it that way. Vegetarians enjoy giving oral sex more than meat eaters. Twitter users are more likely to masturbate.
